Starship Technologies

is developing the future of delivery – a network of robots ready to serve you anytime, anywhere. The company was launched in 2014 by Skype co-founders, Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, and today the autonomous and environmentally green robots are operating in several university campuses in the US and delighting the locals of Milton Keynes, UK, with grocery deliveries.

Starship’s business lies on three growth pillars; consumers, merchants and operations, all enabled by the world’s leading autonomous driving and fleet orchestration systems that elegantly direct the award-winning robots. The business is headquartered in San Francisco, with R&D teams based on a twin-cities model – Helsinki and Tallinn.

Even though Covid-19 initially disrupted Starship’s commercial activities, it has ended up becoming a growth stimulant – especially in the US college campus business. Along with UK grocery delivery business, both businesses are experiencing unprecedented growth.

Now Starship is headed towards times of scaling, targeting 10,000 daily deliveries before the summer. With the future looking bright for the world’s #2 autonomous delivery company, it’s time to grow Starship’s engineering!

Senior Backend Developer

Engineering – Server Team, e-commerce

Servers are where much of the magic happens. Fleet management, routing robots to customers over the most optimal paths, solving escalations from robots, third party partners and mapping.

Handling robots is a broad challenge – one that combines near real-time systems and more traditional entity management, reliable network connectivity and offline prediction of faults, route optimization and customer delivery flows… and a lot more.

Location is Tallinn, Estonia or Helsinki, Finland. Relocation support available.

To be set up for success in this role you would need to have

  • Experience with e-commerce
  • Good knowledge of Node.js
  • Experience with time critical systems and short response times
  • Experience with GraphQL, GoLang and Kafka

It would be great if you were

  • Passionate about solving real world problems
  • Experienced in development of near real-time systems
  • Experienced in database design & architecture
  • Experienced in API design and integrations
  • Comfortable with delivering value through agile development with iterative processes

Senior Backend Developer

Engineering – Server Team, heavy-load distributed systems

Servers are where much of the magic happens. Connecting the robots to the servers and providing low-latency video feeds, routing them to customers over the most optimal paths, solving escalations from robots, third party partners and mapping.

  • Expert level on NodeJS (JavaScript and/or TypeScript)
  • Great understanding of distributed system architecture
  • Experience in developing highly-scalable distributed systems

It is a plus if you have

  • GoLang and Elixir experience
  • Experience in near real-time system development
  • Experience from fast growing startups
  • End-to-end software product ownership

Senior Mobile Developer

Engineering – Mobile Application Team

The Mobile Application Team is looking for a Senior Mobile Developer to help the tightly-knit team to develop the mobile app that customers use for ordering goods, monitoring the robot’s journey and opening the locked cargo.

Location is Tallinn, Estonia or Helsinki, Finland. Relocation support available.

To be set up for success in this role you would need to have

  • Experience in both React Native and native Android or iOS development
  • Passion for creating customer-facing services
  • Highly skilled and efficient at building app experiences
  • Combining data-driven development practices with strong analytical skills
  • Experience building for internal/partner/customer integrations with extensive use of different APIs and microservices

Bonus points from

  • Experience in building state-of-the-art web frontends in React
  • Experience in delivery, navigation and/or e-commerce services
  • Basic knowledge on different API architectures and server-side development in NodeJS

Site Reliability Engineer

Engineering – Site reliability engineering team

Autonomous robots roaming the streets is a great challenge and brings along some unique engineering challenges both on the physical side of the robots as well as at the backend. As a Site Reliability Engineer you will work on the backend infrastructure and platform services that make Starship robots move. This includes low latency messaging systems, real-time video feeds, databases, networking, observability infrastructure and much more.

Location is Tallinn, Estonia or Helsinki, Finland, part-time remote work is an option. Relocation support available.

Your day to day tasks could include

  • Developing and maintaining Starship’s cloud based infrastructure, Kubernetes, Kafka and MongoDb on AWS
  • Automating and simplifying infrastructure management; integrating and reusing where possible, writing code when you need to
  • Ensuring observability of the production environment, from simple metrics and dashboards to custom sidecars and distributed tracing
  • Improving the reliability of Starship’s systems- enable horizontal scaling, automatic failovers, canary deployments and more
  • Analyzing systems performance and removing bottlenecks
  • Helping define the architecture that scales to cities full of robots, delivering goods 24/7

This role could be a good fit for you if you

  • Are keen on Cloud Native Technologies and have experience with things like Kubernetes, Prometheus, Grafana, Traefik and Linkerd, but also realize that there is a time and place for “old school” tech
  • Know what makes operating systems, networks, databases and distributed systems tick
  • Know your Linux, are comfortable within the shell environment and know your way around kernel settings
  • Have good experience with Python or GoLang. These are used daily, but you will also be able to work with a variety of other languages
