Talent Story – Henri Koski, Developer and Freelancer

09 Apr 2018 by Maria Kotaniemi

Who is Henri?

My name is Henri Koski and I’m a 26-year-old developer and freelancer.

What hardware do you use?

Asus UX430UNR.

And what software?

I use Arch Linux as the operating system, VS Code for editing and Docker, Kubernetes and Telepresence as dev/prod tools.

What would be your dream setup?

ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

What is your favorite programming language?

Go. (Talented note: We saw that coming. Henri really amazed us at the Go by Henri event in February where he introduced us and the members of Talented Network into how to build microservices in Kubernetes environment with Go. No question was left without an answer because Henri truly knows his stuff.)

How did you get to know Talented and how did your process go?

I met with Laura and Teemu for a lunch just for a chat last summer. I wasn’t looking for a freelancing gig but when Laura called me and told about one project, I thought why not. It matched my preferences about location and tech quite well.

How long have you been a freelancer and why did you choose freelancing? How does it vary from employment?

I started my company with my friend three years ago but have been working for it full time for only a couple of months. I chose freelancing over employment because freelancers have more freedom but at the same time more responsibilities, and because I wanted to have full control of my work, excitement and money. Speaking of money, when you’re a freelancer you get better salary and you also get to choose the benefits you want to spend that money on.

What would you tell someone who’s thinking about freelancing?

Setting up a company is easy, just get the right people to help you. Also, running the company isn’t really that time-consuming as you might think.
